History
This clock was made by the E. N. Welch Clock Company for the Baird & Dillon Book Company. Baird and Dillon published books which were sold door to door on a cash or subscription basis beginning about 1877. The clocks were given away to their top salesman as prizes. Some may also have been given to their best customers. Welch made several models for Baird and Dillon. The clocks have a stamped brass pendulum with the B&D logo.
This clock has an intact label which identifies it as a Baird & Dillon clock and it has the characteristic B&D pendulum. The name of the clock “The New Lakeside” probably refers to the B&D headquarters which was in the Lakeside Building in Chicago.

Mechanism Restoration

The alarm mechanism was very dirty. Unusual feature of the alarm is the Geneva Stopworks.
I attempted to place a new screw to hold the alarm release lever, but the screw seized and the head broke off. Attemps to removed the residual screw were unsuccessful. To resolve the problem, I made a brass washer to hold the lever in position. Washer is held with an interference fit.
